5 New Pickleball Rules for 2025 – What You Need to Know

There are some exciting rule changes coming to pickleball in 2025 that are intended to make the game even more interesting. Here is a compact summary of the most important changes:

  1. partner responsibility
From 2025, you will also have to monitor your teammates' compliance with the line rules and make clear calls when a ball goes out of bounds (Rule 13.D.1.a). This measure ensures more precise and fairer decisions.

  2. No advice from viewers
In future, spectators will no longer be allowed to intervene in the game or give unsolicited advice (Rule 6.C.4). This means that the influence remains exclusively with the active players and referees.

  3. Verbal signaling during serves
What is new is that players can now also say "not ready" out loud if they cannot receive the serve (Rule 4.C.2). This rule supplements the previously usual hand signal and improves communication on the court.

  4. Free ball release during serve
Until now, it was mandatory to release the ball with the free hand. From 2025, it will be permitted to hit the ball directly from the pickleball paddle - but without generating spin (Rule 4.A.5). This allows more flexibility when serving.

  5. Rally scoring in doubles
The new provisional rules 4.G.1 and 12.B.1 introduce rally scoring in doubles. This means that points are awarded on every rally - even if the serve is not in play. However, traditional scoring will still apply in most competitions.

Pickleball is constantly evolving - and with the new rules for 2025, the game will become even more diverse and attractive for all players. For more details on the rule changes, visit the official USA Pickleball website.
